چکیده

Two cultural treatr7zents were applied in an overstocked loblolly pirze (Pinus taeda L.) plantation (2,900 trees/ha after eight growing seasorzs): precom~nercial tlzinning (Yes or No) to 747 tt-ees/lza after the eighth growing season and broadcast fertilizatiorz (Yes or No) with diamrrzonium phosphate (150 kg/ha of P and 135 kg/ha of N) early in the ninth growing season. Total height and diameter at breast height (dbh) measurenzents were taken periodically through the 14th growing season. Fertilization increased tree volume more than thinning in the 9th through 10th growing seasons, but thinning was most eflective by the 13th growing season. Over the 6-year period, thinning was the most eflective cultural practice: check, I10 dm2; fertilized only, 135 dm'; thinned only, 165 dm'; and thinned and fertilized, 220 dm-'/loblolly pine tree. After the 14th growing season, the fir-st 5 m of bole was divided into five sections beginning at a 15-cm stump height: 15-30, 30-60, 60-125, 125-250, nrzd 250-500 cm, and the volume for each section was calculated. Outside-bark volume per section increased consistently with thinning and fertilization; therefore, cultural practices did not change stern form in the lower bole. South. J. Appl. For. 29(4):215-220.

In southeastern Arkansas, pine growth was monitored for 19 yr after mechanically strip thinning a dense, naturally regenerated, even-aged stand of Gyr-old loblolly pines (Pinus taeda L.) and shortleafpines (P. echinata Mill.) that averaged 16,600 stems/UC. Prescribed winter burns were conducted biennial ly between ages 9 and 20 yr and at 24 yr . Commercial th innings during the 17th and 23rd gr...

Determining the best form factor formula for Loblolly Pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations at the age of 18, in Guilan- northern Iran

In order to determine the best form factor formula for Loblolly Pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations in Talesh (Western Guilan province-Iran), a number of 110 trees were selected based on their distribution in diameter classes, from 12 to 34 cm (in a two- cm diameter interval). First, several quantitative factors including diameter at breast height, diameter at 0.65 m of height, and diameter at st...

Mid-Rotation Silviculture Timing Influences Nitrogen Mineralization of Loblolly Pine Plantations in the Mid-South USA

Intensively managed loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations often develop nutrient deficiencies near mid-rotation. Common silvicultural treatments for improving stand nutrition at this stage include thinning, fertilization, and vegetation control. It is important to better understand the influence of timing fertilization and vegetation control in relation to thinning as part of improving the...

Biofuel Production Impacts on the Management of Southern Pine Plantations in Mississippi

This study evaluated and compared alternative forest management regimes of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) plantations for producing both traditional timber commodities and biofuels. Land expectation values (LEV) and mean annual increments (MAI) of total biomass were applied as economic and biological criteria to determine the optimal management activities for different site indices and drainage cl...

The effects of spacing and thinning on stand and tree characteristics of 3 g-year-old Loblolly Pine

The effects of early and continuous density control on tne characteristics of mature loblolly pine (Pinus tuedu L.) were measured at age 38 and analyzed. Trees in plots planted at spacings of 1.8x 1.8, 2.4x2.4, 2.7x2.7, 3.0x3.0, and 3.7x3.,7 m were either left unthinned or thinned every 5 years beginning at age 18, to residual basal areas of 27.5, 23.0, 18.4, and 13.8 m2 haa’. Trees thinned fro...
